Gave My Soul 05:58
Gave My Soul I feel to take the righteous side, I want to let you know.  I’ve been wondering why it’s all been gone. For sure its been a long way back, since I had to let it go. Still asking how it could have gone so wrong.  I gave my mind I gave my body  I gave my soul Well it must have been so dark outside, that we just had to let it go. Still minding all these things we had done wrong. I couldn't leave the another night, cause the tears they came to call.  For sure it might have brought us way back home. I gave my mind I gave my body  I gave my soul I picked it up again last night cause it wouldn't let me go. Still holding on to to what we might have done Can’t recall we were so close, to take another sight. Still believing to what we thought was right. I gave my mind I gave my body  I gave my soul

The sun will rise again How much did it hurt you? How deep is your pain? If you cant trust the one that should love you. And no one feels the same. When there re no more sources to regain. Please remember my name. Cause I'm the sun and I will rise again tomorrow. Yes I’m the sun and I will come to you again. I’m the sun and I will vanish all your sorrow. And I will make all your troubles end. So did you feel lonely? For how long did you cry? If you cant find a friend to lean on. Or no one really tries. If it feels that no one likes to share. Just remember I’m there. So how tough is your struggle? How hard does it feel? If there is no one left that seems to cares. And nobody seems real. If you need someone to join your fight. Well I'm the light on your side. Cause I’m the sun and I will rise again tomorrow. Yes I’m the sun and I will come to you again. I am the sun and I will vanish all your sorrow. Just in the hope to see you shine again. Just in the hope to see you shine again.

Bittersweet 04:43
Bittersweet All that We have longed for. Some place of our own All we ever needed. Was you to be our home. Sure those days have changed us. They changed us where to walk And all these paths we have taken. They were drawn so long ago. Cause In this house we were living. Life was bittersweet. And oh so many roads we have driven. Just to be back home. These ghosts that once we’d hunted. They were buried long ago. They could not come between us. They went down to deeper soil Now love and rest returned to. The bottom of our souls. Would it make a change though. Well if you had known it all Cause In this house we were living. Life was bittersweet. And oh so many roads we have driven. Just to be back home. Those years we have never found them. They were taken long ago. But all that life you gave us. Well you could have done things worse Now we will return to. How life it should have gone. And all we can rely on. The ways you might have done Cause In this house we were living. Life was bittersweet. And oh so many roads we have driven. Just to be back home. Nanananananaa....

From dusk till dawn Heaven is on the run. With these lives that have become. Don’t make no excuses, for what you could have done. If the angels pray. Now let them show the way. Its a resignation to the war games played. From dusk till dawn we walk From dusk till dawn You better stop believe the change Cause the damage has been done Can you make a call. When the situation s changed Lets hope for the better. And the goverment is rearranged. Now can you say. When the violence is gone away This is all due through the war games played From dusk till dawn we walk From dusk till dawn You better stop believe the change Cause the damage has been done From dusk till dawn we walk From dusk till dawn Now that they have sold our lives And there isn’t anyone Solo Do we have this right. Just to hold each other tight Lets hope for the better. And some sleep tonight If these angels stay. Let them hide our ways And let’s search for a shelter from these wargames played From dusk till dawn we walk From dusk till dawn You better stop believe the change Cause the damage has been done From dusk till dawn we walk From dusk till dawn Now that they have sold our lives And there isn’t anyone

Hold the line Now these times they are changing. And where does it go? Nobody can tell us where the wind blows. And no one will ever know. All that I m asking now at this moment we part. If we go out of this world now let us talk straight from the heart. Hold the line, hold the line. If we go out of this world,  at least our harts will be fine. Too many roads travelled. And lessons we’ve learned. Now we got some weight in our suitcase. This knowledge we’ve earned. But if there is nothing out there. And no one returns Now lets get rid of this luggage That might as well be burned Hold the line, hold the line. If we go out of this world,  at least our harts will be fine. So look straight in my eyes now. And just let us be. These two tiny creatures. The world ever will see. And if life is a wonder Please wonder with me Because this life and love is as straight as you and I can be Hold the line, hold the line. If we go out of this world,  at least our harts will be fine. Hold the line and hold me tight. There are so many fears around us. That I need you by my side. Hold the line and hold me tight. There are so many fears around us. That I need you here... tonight.

Well I guess I’ve never told you and I guess you’ve never felt. I won’t be Richard Branson but I'm doing well. And I know you've always asked me and I am sure you always will. Who is gonna pay the rent who is gonna pay these bills? And I know you've always wanted someone. It’s better than alone. But I guess that I have told you before. And right now you need to know, to know. Don't wait for my money, wait for my heart, wait for my heart. Because I don't save my money, but I save my heart, save my heart for you. So you thought that I was loaded. Well that is what I am. With my dreams unfolded. I don’t feel like wasting them. So open your soul if you want to be around. Music is my rhythm and this passion is my sound. And I know you’ve always wanted someone. To be there to steal the show. But I guess that I have warned you before. And right now you need to know, to know. Don't wait for my money, wait for my heart, wait for my heart. Because I don't save my money, but I save my heart, save my heart for you. Don't wait for my money, wait for my heart, wait for my heart. Because I don't save my money, but I save my heart, save my heart for you. Now you know that I'm a poor man. With only debts on my mind. Music is my freedom. And a man is hard to find. So open your soul And let me be around You can be my rhythm And I will be your sound And I know you’ve always wanted someone. It’s better than alone. But I guess that I have told you before And right now you need to know, to know. Don't wait for my money, wait for my heart, wait for my heart. Because I don't save my money, but I save my heart, I save my heart, I save my heart, I save my heart, save my heart.

When love meets hope They say it’s easy things they will be fine. But they don't know what it is to hold that line. Sometimes I doubt over all what has passed. And if we still deserve the time that is left. When love meets hope we will meet again. When love meets hope we will meet again. Life is humble and it can be sweet. Depends all on the ones you choose to meet. So when the line holds stops and there is no more time. Don’t let us leave here from this earth so fine. When love meets hope we will meet again. When love meets hope we will meet again. Bridge So when the lights dim and the rain it falls. As the lonely fool repeats his call. To walk that line will bring some strength and rest. Might be considered as a endless test. When love meets hope we will meet again. When love meets hope we will meet again.

No time to waste And I’ll wait for the day you‘re gonna love your self. Although I love the way you care for everybody else. But baby life can so pretty. Life could be so fine. And I wanna take advantage of the time. Cause baby we got no time to waste. For all these dreams we ever made. And I know, you will know, someday. And I’ll wait for the day you’re gonna make that change. And I know its hard these days, but we need to re-arrange. Cause baby life feels like a circle. That we turn every time. But I wanna break the circle and the time. Cause baby we got no time to waste. For all these dreams we ever made. And I know, you will know, someday. Cause baby we got no time to waste. For all these dreams we ever made. And I know, you will know, someday. And I’ll wait for that day we can be on ourselves. Although I love to share the good times with anybody else. But life can be a prison, if we don't take the time. So let us go and chase these dreams I wanna make you mine. Cause baby we got no time to waste. For all these dreams we ever made. And I know, you will know, someday. Cause baby we got no time to waste. For all these dreams we ever made. And I know, you will know, someday.

Still Crazy 02:58
Still crazy So let us drink a glass of wine. Like we used to do. Let’s bring back these memories. And all that we went through. Still I try to understand. What is love and what a man should do. Let me try again some day. These words they might slip through. So let us share our stories now. Where life has brought us to. Let’s talk friends and family. And what the time made us do. Let me try to understand. Why life parted us in two. Still I can remember when. Our hearts were one all good. So let us finish this final one. For the road where we should move. But let’s meet soon again some time. Cause I really would like to know. She walks away and I am still here. Drinking maybe one or two. With these words still stuck upon my throat. Still crazy.

At least the music is live So when there is no tomorrow. And everything goes down the drain. You can listen to the silence. And the sadness will remain. But do you feel the heart beat. The blood is running through your veins. Can you feel your body and it wants to move again Music is hope well. Music is life. Music is freedom. Music survives. It brings you back home. And It turns on the lights. Even when there is no tomorrow. At least the music is life. So when there is no more answer. Just the violence and pain. Another hopeless situation. Or a new political game. Now can you see the sunshine. Let a newborn get a name. With just the sound of silence. Everything will stay the same. Music is hope well. Music is life. Music is freedom. Music survives. It brings you back home. And It turns on the lights. Even when there is no tomorrow. At least the music is life. If you cant stand all the trouble. The poor people they pay. The rich are earning double. There should be another way. But with so much to worry. You deserve a little sound. Something that keeps you dancing. And moves the world around. Music is hope well. Music is life. Music is freedom. Music survives. It brings you back home. And It turns on the lights. Even when there is no tomorrow. At least the music is life.

On My Way 04:45
On my way I put my guitars and my amp in the back of my car. Put my navigation to our house where you are. Now I am trying to find the guys to drive along. But It’s again the banjo player that is gone. Well now the road is empty and the darkness It’s everywhere. There is just the stars and the stripes and the distance that I can stare. Well now this deer it also stands and stares at me. We’d hit it faster than my eyes could really see. But I am on my way to you, I am on my way. And I won,t let you wait, honey I am on my way. I am on my way to you, I am on my way. And I won,t let you wait, honey I am on my way. Now the car is all fixed and we really wanna drive back home. But you could wait now for that hunger to come strong. So we had to stop just a little while to eat. Thats why we could not keep up our normal speed. But I am on my way to you, I am on my way. And I won,t let you wait, honey I am on my way. I am on my way to you, I am on my way. And I won,t let you wait, honey I am on my way. Well now the last thing that could stop us you would think. Just around the corner, there was this this open bridge. So we had to drive through the centre back again. And baby you cannot imagine, who I met there. But I am on my way to you, I am on my way. And I won,t let you wait, honey I am on my way. I am on my way to you, I am on my way. I am on my way to you, I am on my way. I am on my way to you, I am on my way. I am on my way to you, I am on my way.

about

The melodies on Honesty of the Hopeful are catchy, supporting the song themes, sometimes energetic, sometimes sad and compelling. Grooving American uptempo folk rhythms are alternated with slow Tom Waits-like ballads and soulful folk songs. All made with authenticity, honesty and the hope of the musicians that things will be better in the end.

After years of being an attic room project, the Dieter van der Westen Band took the spotlight in 2018 with their well received debut album Me and You. On October 14th the new album Honesty of the Hopeful will be released and on the 16th the band will present it during a live concert in Paradiso Amsterdam. Together with his brother Eric van der Westen, Dieter took advantage of the quiet Covid period to arrange these new songs and to search for the right sounds and instrumentation. Honesty of the Hopeful is an ode to everyone who makes the most out of life in an honest way, looks ahead in a positive way and does not give up.

Inspired by the music and artists his older brothers used to listen to like Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Mark Knopfler and Tom Waits, Dieter started to write his own songs on an acoustic guitar in his hometown of Tilburg at an early age. Meanwhile he also got inspired by Worldmusic artists like Khaled, Habib Koite, Idir and Manu Chao. Music he got to know through his Moroccan friends in the neighbourhood he grew up in. At the age of 16 he first started to perform as a guitar player in North African music. Some years later he would play all over the world with his Dutch / Moroccan band Kasba and collaborated with well known Dutch artists such as the Grammy Award winning Metropole orchestra.

As a side project Dieter van der Westen had always been recording his own Folk and Americana songs. It was only in 2017 that bookingsagent Jerome Williams got hold of his album Old Oak Tree, where Dieter had compiled some of these songs. He asked Dieter to perform the songs with a full band. And so it happened that after a few phone calls the Dieter van der Westen Band was born with some Dutch top musicians in the ranks. They started to play festivals and theatres in The Netherlands with their shared love for Folk and Americana.

The band members show an intriguing track record; Dieter's brother Eric van der Westen worked as bassplayer with the Turkish pop legend Sezen Aksu, Dutch Jazz composer Martin Fondse and the Brazilian top artist Lenine. Guitarist Aron Raams played with jazzcollective Gare du Nord and with Candy Dulfer, drummer Gijs Anders van Straalen can also be found in Wouter Hamel's band and with classical artist Iris Hond. Joost Abbel writes his own Americana songs under the pseudonym Johnny, plays banjo and dobro and is also a member of Zorita and Juan Juan. Violinist Mirte de Graaff plays with Folkgroup Last Thursday and folk singer songwriter Jasper Schalks.
